Home [Sweet Home]
noun
“Home means a place where a person lives, feels a sense of belonging, or comes from.” – Cambridge Dictionary
The Arrival
That first step inside your own home feeling. There’s a special kind of peace that follows the first breath you take when getting home. The air is different. It’s your air. The kind that smells like you and perhaps the last things you were doing while there. It’s quiet. You notice the tension you’ve been holding onto throughout the day begin to settle. Your body begins to relax before your mind does. There’s a reason the feeling comes before the thought, your body recognizes it’s safe here. There’s a reason it actually smells sweet. Your body remembers where it’s been and begins to remind you through sensation before you’ve even gathered your next few thoughts. Your nervous system naturally slows down where it feels safe. The scent of home. Home Sweet Home.
First Thoughts
You notice the usual stressors of the day fading away into the background. The early morning routine rush. The “What am I forgetting today?” kind of thoughts. The traffic on the way to and from work. The daily To-Do List. For a moment, the need to check what time it is seems less important. As you look around and begin setting the day’s equipment down, there’s a thought that begins to bring a small amount of happiness. Everything is right where you left it. Your favorite things. Your essential things. The things that have been waiting for you patiently at home all day.
The keys go into their spot. The work bag on the hanger or usual place. Coat goes on the rack. Shoes go on the shelf. That little smile brightens a bit more. You step deeper into your home where that thing you haven’t thought of since you left comes into focus. Perhaps it’s a cup of hot tea. Maybe you enjoy lighting a scented candle to ease the mind. The soft spot on the couch. Your favorite music your ears have been waiting to hear. Cracking the window just slightly, for the perfect amount of fresh air. The soothing serenity of your most favorite things.
Settling In
As you settle into your comfort zone, the evening’s events begin to come together. You’re in your comfortable clothes, having your favorite treat, nestled in your favorite spot, at home sweet home. Something you’ve been looking forward to but haven’t thought of until just now. Tonight, a new episode of your favorite show will air. Perfect. Later, you already think you know what you’re going to have for dinner. Will it be take out, or a hot home-cooked meal? The thought of treating yourself to something tasty seems to brighten the room. And after that, you’ll wash up and complete your nightly hygiene before finally letting all your thoughts stop for a full night’s rest of sleep in your own bed.
You do a big stretch, maybe a quiet yawn or gentle sigh. Yeah, that hit the spot. The beginning of a great evening. Your thoughts all to yourself. No external stressors pressuring you to hurry up. A moment to slow down, catch your breath and breathe easy. You may close your eyes and let your expression soften, shoulders at ease. Your performance for the day in front of others has come to a conlusion. What a wonderful feeling to finally be home.
More Than Just Home
When you’re finally home, it’s much more than just the thought of being there. It’s the emotional experience being at home creates for you. And on top of that, it’s the mood you allow yourself to experience while you’re there. What we feel, what we hear, the things we see and the things we do at home are what makes being at home so sweet. It’s the checking the emotions of the day at the door kind of practice that sets the tone for your evening at home. How we treat ourselves when we’re alone shapes the experience. The inner voice we use to guide ourselves when we’re alone with ourselves. It’s important to listen to our bodies. Is it sore or tired? Is it hungry? Dehydrated? Maybe it’s tense. Our bodies are part of us too, and we have a tendency of putting it behind the performance of the day. Home is where you get to rest, recharge and meet all your needs and wants before your responsibility of tomorrow comes again. It’s important to be kind to yourself, especially at home sweet home.
