Air Climate Comfort [at Home]
The quality of air. It’s not really something we pay attention to, until it’s not there. It’s something that’s easy to take for granted. Kind of like our health. We don’t realize how important it is until we get sick. Likewise, the air we breathe seems to be an afterthought. That is, until we have trouble breathing. The feeling of a stuffy nose when we get sick. That first sneeze sensation that lingers long enough to make you think twice. Uh oh, am I catching a cold? What was that tingling? Is it allergies? Or was it just the wind? I didn’t even go anywhere dusty today. Hmm. Did anyone I was with seem sick today? Was I with someone under the weather?
What’s that old saying? You didn’t know the good times until you’ve had the bad times? It’s sort of like starting with gratitude instead of it being a side effect. It’s called being proactive about your air. We don’t really think about it, but they actually do subdivide airspace and sell it. Did you know they govern, legislate, and regulate airspace? Wow. How cool is that? And just think, all that air inside your home already belongs to you. Air Estate. Your very own Air Estate. That’s why it’s important to take care of the state of your air. Because it’s your air. It belongs to you. That you’ll be breathing. Because, you know, we don’t want to stop breathing anytime soon, do we?
Air Climate
Air climate. Climate change. No, I’m not talking about global warming, although, the weather has been kind of funny lately. I’m talking more about that thing on the wall Mom and Dad used to scream at us about if we got too close to it. Don’t touch my thermostat, young lady. If you break that thermostat, young man, you’re grounded. All hail the thermostat. The most holy apparatus in the house. The ancient one with a delicate analog dial. The one you had to get up close and squint to read. That you didn’t dare look at in Mom and Dad’s presence.
Nowadays it’s usually the cute little plastic box on the wall with a digital display. It still says the temperature and sometimes the date of the day. It’s easier to read. It has a gentle backlit glow. And the numbers say the room temperature in Fahrenheit, you know. Unless you like Celsius. What’s that? There’s one more? What did you say? Kelvin?! Who invited him? Oh no, don’t tell me you’re thinking about chemistry. I totally failed that class. Yes, I know what a joule is. Do I know what the °F on the thermostat stands for? Yes, of course I do. It stands for—Failure?! Hey! That’s not funny.
Climate Comfort
Anyways, as I was saying. When you’re in control of your climate, you can control your climate comfort. And there’s more to the air than just its temperature. There’s humidity too. That’s the amount of moisture in the air that causes the morning dew. Hot and cold. Wet or dry. These are the things that affect not only our sinuses, but also our eyes. Because they are connected, after all. One is just downstream from the other. But when the river runs dry, another system kicks in, the one that makes you want to cry. Just for lubrication, of course.
Come to think of it, I think those digital displays on the fancier thermostats do have one more reading. For humidity. Otherwise, it is kind of hard to tell how humid it is unless we really pay attention. It’s rather subtle and only gets noticed well, when there’s a noticeable change. Or if we listen to the weather people on TV. It’s something you’ve really got to be tuned into to notice it before it turns into trouble. Like dry eyes, or an itchy nose. You know they make a machine for that, as far as humidity goes.
Humidifiers. Dehumidifiers. For the amount of moisture in your air. And as far as the temperature is concerned, we’ve got heaters and air conditioners for that. And if you don’t have a thermostat, your heating and cooling may not be central, so you’ll have to adapt. Need to feel a breeze, but you don’t want to be out in the wind? Just turn on the fan and sit this one in. And then there’s that one room. With a west-facing wall. That always seems hotter than the thermostat hall. For that room, there’s a portable air conditioner that you can put on call.
