Food
Food is more than just fuel for your body. It fuels your mind, body, and soul. I think that’s why they call it soul food, although I was thinking more of things that nourish you on a physiological level. But there’s all sorts of food. Which things should I keep in thought? In fact, when I go grocery shopping it feels like I need to exercise an unreasonable amount of restraint. The treats turn to me with temptation. The baked goods are barking to be bought. The chocolate is calling my name. And goodness forbid I go grocery shopping while hungry. Now that’s a mistake. I always come home with more than I need.
When I go grocery shopping while I’m hungry, it always seems difficult to tell that I’m making a mistake because it doesn’t feel like I’m making one at all. I’m hungry. I want to buy food. No, deeper. I need to buy food. And when I need to buy food, my eyes are always bigger than my stomach. My shopping cart gets longer than my shopping list. The bill goes higher than I’d hoped. And you know what else? My surplus of food needs storage!
Storage
You know what’s the most disappointing thing? Going to the fridge and finding nothing to eat? No! That’s not it. It’s finding your favorite food you finally thought of on a whim, that you know is in there. It’s been waiting for you. You’ve been saving it for later. Now is the time. Right now. You scurry over to the fridge. You swing open the door. You pull that drawer out. And it greets you with the unpleasant smell of spoiled food. It bids you farewell with the unpleasant feeling of a spoiled mood. Awh man! I let it go sour. Definitely a downer.
You worked hard for that money. You waited until after work to go grocery shopping. You took your time in the supermarket. There was careful consideration to pick out that thing. You carried it with you to the cashier. You checked out with it. Got in the car with it. Took it home to your place. And picked out a special place in the refrigerator to keep it fresh. Ugh! How could this happen?
Food Storage [at Home]
Spoiled food. It happens to the best of us. It’s happened to us before, and you know what, it’ll probably happen again. That’s why they invented food storage. You can’t always prevent yourself from having too much food, because a human’s got to eat. But you can help keep your favorite finds fresher, longer. There’s a certain kind of food storage that really does do what it’s supposed to. It stores that food. And it stores it well. It not only keeps it contained and well organized, it locks in the freshness. It has an airtight seal. It’s so lovely, it’s leakproof. It snaps out the spoilage. It’s one of my most favorite homewares. It’s called Snapware.
Now, I first encountered Snapware in one of my most favorite places. Costco, of course! Who doesn’t love Costco? And I’ve been using Snapware ever since. I’m a long-term Snapware enjoyer. Some of my Snapware is still with me a whole decade later. Now that’s a homeware dedicated to the deed. The deed of food storage. It does what I need and it snaps together with speed.
It has actually become a gold standard in my kitchen. Let me tell you some of my most favorite things about Snapware. First of all, it comes in two different types of containers. Glass and Plastic. My absolute favorite, the Glass Snapware series. Why is it my favorite, you ask? Because the glass is gorgeous, of course. But that’s not all. There’s more to it than that, I promise. The glass doesn’t just glitter, it’s tempered Pyrex brand glass. What does that mean? It means that the glass container is more durable than regular glass. It’s durable enough to endure the heat of the oven, that’s what it means. Because that’s what tempered Pyrex glass is designed to do.
It’s oven safe. Except the lids, those are plastic still. It’s stain resistant. It’s microwave safe. It’s dishwasher safe. Wow, it’s starting to sound so perfect. Is it too good to be true? Are there even any downsides to this stuff? Well, it is actually really good at its job. The only thing with glass is, you got to be careful with it. Glass breaks when you drop it on hard surfaces, like tile or concrete. And you know, I’m kind of clumsy so I need to be careful around my feet. So I don’t drop it on them, that is. But that’s okay, because when I have them all filled up with food in my fridge, boy does it look neat.
And actually, there is a solution that does make up for this downside to the Glass Snapware series. They already invented it. It’s called the Plastic Snapware series. Now don’t get me wrong, the plastic is pretty too. Same great seal. Still leakproof. It does practically all the things the Glass Snapware series does. Perfect. It’s microwave safe. Definitely goes in the dishwasher. It’s lighter weight and harder to break. So it feels safer to take out of town on a road trip, day hike, or the daily drive to work. It’s great for the kids, or for if you’re clumsy like me and sometimes drop things by accident. There’s only a couple differences between the Plastic and Glass Snapware series, in my opinion. The Plastic Snapware series may stain more easily than the Glass Snapware series. Especially if you leave red sauce in there for, like, a really long time. The other thing—and it may seem like common sense—is that the Plastic Snapware series does not go in the oven. Now don’t go putting it in there, that’s not safe at all. But other than that it is pretty affordable and the quality is not cheap. In fact, I think Snapware the number one brand in locking lids. Oh, and last but not least, Snapware is BPA free. Because that’s not a bonus, that’s basic safety. Beautiful.
