Gratitude [at Home]

noun

“Gratitude means the quality or feeling of being thankful or appreciative for the good things, help, or kindness you receive.” – Cambridge Dictionary

Inbound Gratitude

Gratitude. Most usually felt through the highs of life. When we receive as much as or more than expected. There’s a certain threshold our results usually need to pass through in order for us to feel it. Fall anywhere short, and we seem to get disappointed. Why wasn’t it as I expected? What went wrong? Am I not good enough? All the thoughts that follow the latter. In our hopes and dreams, we created the scenario that already set the standard for gratitude. We just didn’t realize it yet.

In our hopes and dreams we feel we deserve a certain amount of success. We determine the results before the action. We look at the odds, pick and choose what we think we deserve, what will likely occur, and how it should all happen. Then we take the risk. We risk it for a biscuit and say, “It should be buttery, extra sugar crumbs on top. Toasted. With honey on the side.” Just the way we like it. Extra sweet and savory. Sometimes it works out. Our hopes and dreams materialize as we imagined. Our hearts swell and our pride is full. Other times it doesn’t. And we’re left chasing that high. It’s easy to get stuck with the expectation that every experience we risk will have all that we bargained for.

And yet, there’s another special place gratitude can be felt deeply. A place where respect, love, loyalty, and quietude culminate to create a special place where your gratitude is steady. Always within reach. It’s right there, in your heart. It’s where gratitude precedes the gamble. It’s the inner knowing that regardless of what happens, you will still have all the love and respect for yourself at the end of the day. No matter what. A place where you’re already committed to yourself and your peace of mind. Inner gratitude.

Outbound Gratitude

When we find our special place of inner gratitude, we realize there is something waiting for us there. Something unexpected, perhaps. There is an unusual warmth your heart has for itself. Like a long-lost love that has been waiting for you to notice them. Your reflection smiles quietly back at you. Your heart has been there all along. Through every high and every low. Your reflection has been quietly by your side all this time.

Hand in hand, you walk side by side. You realize, you may be alone at times, but you never have to be lonely. You will always have yourself. You can always respect your decisions. Allow love into your heart. Be loyal to who you are. Find quietude in the noise. And have gratitude join you on your journey. Here, we see our glass is made full. We have poured into ourselves. We’re ready to share our hearts with other people and things along the way.

Gratitude at Home

When we begin with gratitude, the gift of gentleness guides us. When we’re grateful for the good people and things in our lives, we’re ready to take better care of them. Cherish them. With the same gentleness we have toward ourselves. We realize we may have been chasing after things that, at the end of the day, didn’t even really matter to us after all. We realize, the most important thing of all, we already have. Gratitude. Gratitude for ourselves. For always being there when we needed us most. For being strong, even when we were down. For having courage when we didn’t feel brave. For trying again tomorrow, even after we felt like quitting today. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice inside that says, “I’ll still be there for myself tomorrow.”

There’s a special kind of appreciation that grows with gratitude for ourselves. We approach things with satisfaction instead of hunger. We’re ready to give before we receive. We bring our best selves for the people and things in our life we care about most. We show them we care. We show them our warmth. There’s a special kind of magnetism that follows the heart that gives. It attracts the same. When we water our garden, it blossoms. When it blossoms, it bears fruit. The fruits of our labor. The fruits of our hopes and dreams, materialized before our very eyes. The same success, and yet there’s a reassuring kind of steadiness that this success is sustainable. Gratitude at home.

There’s an old saying, appreciation is more than appreciated. There’s a place where respect is cherished. A place where love is given. A place where quietude can be found. The place where gratitude grows. That place is in your heart. A place that glows like an undying flame. It shimmers on your skin and twinkles in your eyes. It illuminates the room and warms the home. It fills the heart full of gratitude and happiness. A full heart is a happy heart. A happy heart makes a happy home. Home sweet home.
