Furniture & Fixtures [at Home]

Ever walk into one of those model homes in a new housing tract? It’s perfectly staged and everything. It smells like all new . . . everything! The paint is fresh, everything is clean. The furniture is all brand new. The furnishings are fresh. The linen has never been used. Nothing is stained. Nothing needs to be cleaned. No fabric is faded. The fixtures are perfectly polished. No personal possessions out of place. Or anywhere for that matter. Everything looks . . . perfect. Almost too perfect. Everything looks professionally positioned. It makes you go wow, I need one of these. I like this. This is for me. I wonder what it would take to make my place look like this.

There’s a reason those model homes are so well staged. They’re for sale! It’s an open house. It’s meant to dazzle you with all its different new features. And it does. Because without all that polish, it would look strange. Ever see a new home under construction, but almost completed? It looks funny. Like something we haven’t seen before. Foreign, yeah, it looks foreign. You almost never see a home without anything in it. Maybe right after it’s done being constructed. Or someone moved out. But even then, there’s evidence of someone having lived there. When it’s brand new and empty, it almost leaves you guessing where everything should go. You walk into the room and wonder, “What even goes here?”

Furniture

When we think of Furniture, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Ah, my bed! I love sleeping in my bed. Oh, oh, the couch. My comfy couch. Hmm maybe my desk. I put my laptop there, and I like having a mug with a coaster on it. Mmm hot tea. That hits the spot. But wait, I want to sit down at the desk. The standing desk is at work. For when I’m so tired of sitting. My home office can have a regular, more cozy computer chair. And what if I put an area rug underneath it? I like the feeling of soft fabric under my feet. Because I’m at home, and I can be barefoot if I want to.

It’s not like I have to put in a full shift or anything. I’ll be here for like, as long as I want to. As long as I need to. Well, I’m at home anyways, I don’t need to stay here long at all! I’ll be here, with this piece of furniture for as little or as much time as it makes sense. Because at home, I’m the boss of me. What I say goes. And I say . . . this furniture goes here!

Fixtures

Fixtures!? Like a light fixture? Yeah that is the kind of Fixture we usually think of when we think of a Fixture in the home. But actually, there are all sorts of Fixtures. In fact, if we think about it, anything that is affixed to the house is technically a Fixture at home. And also, there’s furniture that gets affixed to it as well. Well, that gets kind of confusing, doesn’t it? But it makes sense. We do want the doors bolted on. Wait, aren’t those usually screwed in with hinges? You get the point.

Of course, the kitchen cabinets are affixed as well. The dishwasher, the oven, all of those kitchen countertops. Sometimes even the shelves, because what if there’s an earthquake? Well, if it’s permanently attached, that Furniture is technically a Fixture now. It’s not going anywhere. Not without a permit. And if we get a permit then we need an inspection, don’t we? Wait, I thought this was a repair, isn’t that exempt? Is it the first time we’ve worked on this Fixture or not? I don’t even know. I better consult a professional or something. Let’s take a break. I’m getting a headache. Where’s the nearest Starbucks?
