Cleaning & Laundry [at Home]
The scent of your own laundry detergent. Clean clothes. Free of the smell of yesterday. Where the smell of the day and yesterday’s stress is washed away. The satisfaction of those stubborn stains being unseen from our favorite outfits. A coffee spill. Red sauce on a white shirt. Oh gosh, a grass stain. Oops! We’re messy, but cute. Sometimes we miss our mouths and something lands where it’s not supposed to. Just a moment of feeling hot before the realization that it’ll clean right up cools us off.
Like that new car smell, walking into a room and smelling the freshness of your favorite cleaner or fragranced disinfectant seems more pleasant. Ever walk into a room where the air is stale? It seems to set off little alarms in our thinking. What is that smell? Is that mold? Better break out the bleach. Or do I just smell dust? Ugh, I think I’m going to sneeze. When was the last time someone was here. Geez, this hasn’t been cleaned in a while. Maybe I should hold my breath. Where’s the exit?
Unlike visiting somewhere that doesn’t belong to us, being able to keep our homes clean is actually a privilege. We get to pick the priority and how it looks when it’s all cleaned up. We can style the surroundings with our own arrangements. We get to pick our own detergents and soaps. The fragrance we find most fond. If it’s dusty, we can dust it. If it’s stained, surely we can soak it. Does it need scrubbing? There’s a brush for that. Step on something? Where’s the broom? We can sweep it. Floor feel sticky? Maybe it’s time for the mop. Don’t feel like dusting? Does the carpet need cleaning? Out comes the vacuum cleaner. Do the dishes need to be done? Just load up the dishwasher. In a few hours, they come out sparkling clean.
Cleaning
Cleaning, the task that never ends. Something we don’t always look forward to. A responsibility that feels like it can wait until later. Until it’s absolutely necessary. We seem to not mind our own mess. That is, until someone else sees it. Oh shoot, I better pick up the place. My goodness, I really let it go. I can’t let the guests see the home looking like this. They’ll think I’m a pig. What’s that smell? Where’s the air freshener? The feeling of pressure before our performance. Before our lives are on display. It’s just for one day. Just for the night. Only a few hours. Until the guests are gone! And yet, we’re the ones who have to live with our own homes.
Sometimes, we just need a little motivation to get the job done. Cleaning doesn’t always jump out and sweep you off your feet, but it can be a rewarding responsibility to fulfill. We deserve a clean home too. Our feet deserve swept floors and shiny surfaces. Free of sharp things we may step on, accidentally of course. Who doesn’t remember stepping on a LEGO block in our childhood room? Or stubbing a toe on something where it shouldn’t be? Ouch! Shoes are for function, fashion and foot safety. But in our own homes, it’s nice to be able to put our feet up. We should be allowed to feel the feeling of freedom through our feet. Soft and clean surfaces for our sensitive soles. And our noses deserve fresh fragrances too. Our senses deserve to be soothed in our own sanctuaries.
Laundry
Laundry. These days, is actually quite luxurious. The scrubbing sessions of old with washboards and suds certainly don’t sound satisfying, but that was the way it was. And the clothesline outside was only a few generations ago. Today, we just gather our garments and sort them by color, category, or size. Into the basket and then into the machine. Pour in the detergent, perhaps fabric softener and a little bleach. Each load customizable, from strength, fill and speed. Out of the wash and into the dryer. With the press of the buttons, everything is ready in just a few hours.
Ah, the feeling of fresh, clean clothes. No stinky sweat that curls our nose. No more unpleasant body odors that offend where we go. Yes, it’s embarrassing to be smelly. But it’s also refreshing to smell fresh. A fresh scent, a pleasant pleasantry. Perfectly polite. So soft and so clean. It’s a wonderful feeling, if you know what I mean. Fabric that tickles to the touch. That fits like a glove. Or is comfortable as can be. Nice and neatly folded. Now if only they made a machine for that too.
The clothesline may be antiquated, but air drying is still in style. For those delicate undergarments and specialty-care clothes. There are even laundry bags to help separate the rest of the load from those. Caring for your clothes can be tedious, but there’s more to it than just feeling clean. It helps us present ourselves the way we want to be perceived. Smell good, look good, feel good. Clean clothes confidence. That’s self-care too. Look the part, act the part, get the part. When you take care of yourself, it sets you apart.
